Our vaporizer concept is the result of more than a decade of careful product development, including extensive prototyping, testing, and review (the current release is 63.7). Although our product may appear to be very simple, each Launch Box vaporizer represents the effort of many skilled craftsman, and encompasses more than a week of effort from start to finish.
As is so often the case, to make something appear truly simple actually requires a surprising amount of complexity and effort. Each Box, and even some of the accessories, are manually created using methods of our own design on tools we custom built.
HOW TO USE THE LAUNCH BOX
- Fill the trench with dry, ground material (the drier the herb and the finer the grind the better) but don’t tamp it down.
- Push the battery all of the way in and begin drawing fairly slowly after about 3 seconds.
- Draw on the Box for 12 to 14 seconds and then remove the battery. Don’t forget this. Ever. You will ruin the trenchful of herb and cross over from vaporization to smoking. (Note: new models come equipped with a push-back ring for the battery, so that the battery will lose contact when pressure is released. This ring can be removed if so desired.)
- Shake the Box or stir the trench between hits.
- Connoisseurs always use a fresh battery. However, if you want to squeeze more juice out of a weakened battery (i.e. any battery that has been used once) and feel like a smaller trench anyway, you can safely under-fill the trench as well. Mileage will vary as to battery strength/health.
- Repeat as needed!
It’s easy – simply grind your clean herbal material to a fine consistency using a regular grinder. Slide the lid to one side and sprinkle your material into the bowl. Close the lid, firmly press a freshly charged battery into the Box, and start enjoying your vapor. After each draw, withdraw the battery, and shake the Box to stir the material inside – this ensures that the Box is always fresh and ready when you need it. Repeat as needed.
The stored electrical energy in the battery is carried to a heating element in the bowl of the Box which gently warms your herbals. The Box provides just enough heat to release the active ingredients as a vapor without causing combustion to occur.
Vaporization (avoiding combustion) is good for a number of reasons:
- More medicinal qualities are available because they are not being consumed by fire – vaporization is more efficient.
- There are little to no harmful combustion byproducts (NO tar, carbon/nitrogen monoxides, free radicals, particulates/soot, etc).
- Vaporization is overall much healthier for you and a LOT easier on the lungs – no more unnecessary coughing.
- The fine qualities and taste of your herbals are fully available without being obscured by the noxious byproducts of burning.
The Box is much smaller than a water pipe, does not require water, can be used outdoors in windy conditions, and in general is far less fragile than most water pipes. The Box is also much stealthier.
A water pipe, by burning your herb, generates all sorts of secondary and harmful chemical byproducts which must then be filtered out using water bubbling. While water filtering does not remove all of the harmful combustion byproducts, it does remove some of the active ingredients by vapor condensation in the water. As such, a water pipe destroys some of your herbal goodness by burning and condensation losses. More medicinal qualities are available from your herbs with Box vaporization.
With a water pipe, the wide shape of the mouthpiece naturally encourages the user to take deeper draws farther into the lungs. To get the same effect out of the Box, we instruct users to take long slow deep draws. The slowness is for how the Box heats, and the longness is so you take a deeper draw fully into the more absorbent passages of the lungs. We recommend that first time Box users learn how to control the temp in the Box by controlling their draw rate, and then work to take fewer, much longer and deeper draws. In this way, you will find that the Box is far more useful, effective and efficient than any water pipe.
The most obvious differences are noticed in the first three minutes and more subtle effects can be noticed the next day. Much of what a smoker experiences in the first minutes are actually the side effects of smoke, rather than being due to any medicinal qualities. The experience is the result of a ‘damage control’ response by the body. Smokers who are not already used to vaporizers often cannot tell that anything is happening at all – until about 3 minutes later! Vapor is generally described as being stronger, lighter, clearer, more thoughtful, longer lasting, and more energetic. You are much less likely to get some of the common physical aspects with a vaporizer. People generally feel better, clearer and cleaner the next day after vaporizing – without the ‘fuzziness’ that might be experienced the day after a smoking session.
Generally, the difference in the bio-available yield between vaping and smoking is (or should be) about 4 to 1 for any “good” reasonably well designed vaporizer. Therefore, being conservative, it is fairly safe to claim that the use of good technique with the Launch Box should be able to get at least into the 3 to 1 range, acknowledging that some sacrifices have been made towards overall utility and convenience.
Not only is vaporization much healthier, it will save you money. For example, if you consume $100 worth of herbals via smoking in a month, then buying and using a Box consistently will pay for itself twice-over in the first month of usage.
The Box performance is much better than any other vaporizer in its class due to the following four factors:
1) The Box generates vapor only when needed – it does not waste any vapor by staying hot between draws or by continuing to cook the load after you have had enough. Loaded material can continue to be cycled over any extended period of time, delivering vapor when you want it without ever having to wait. Conscious user technique with the battery can ensure that there is zero lost vapor every time.
2) The Box makes careful use of infra-red (IR) characteristics in its design. IR vaporizers (although very uncommon and very expensive) tend to be fairly good since they have overall heat distribution characteristics similar to pure convection designs for smaller loads. The Box uses only and exactly as much heat energy as is needed for vaporization (the Box is easily one of the world’s most energy-efficient vaporizers).
3) The Box incorporates several vapor channel flow features to ensure the absolute minimum vapor condensation. Convection vaporizers necessarily need to use significantly more heat energy to operate efficiently – heat which must be removed from the vapor prior to ingestion. Any surfaces, piping, or water chambers used to cool the vapor are also condensation sites. Condensed vapor is lost vapor and that means that a big pipe overall is less efficient. Any parts that require occasional cleaning also indicate a significant volume of previously lost vapor. Used natively (without the optional stems), the Box rarely requires any cleaning since it delivers the vapor directly to you – without converting some of it into black gunk along the way.
4) The closed chamber allows for the simplest and most reliable form of mechanical stirring possible: shaking. By shaking the Box between draws, the previously ground load can be evenly re-mixed to ensure much more even heating. The clear lid also allows for immediate inspection to determine both the effectiveness of the stirring and the degree of completion. In this way, good user technique can result in excellent overall performance and efficiency.
In summary, in-house lab testing has shown the Box vape to be nearly as efficient as the best portable vapes (when used correctly), and noticeably better than most. Dollar for dollar, the Box delivers more vapor in more locations more naturally than any other.
The following materials are used in the construction of the Box: Select maple hardwood, Stainless steel screen (the same material used in high-end cookware), Acrylic (Plexiglas) cover, steel pins and a stainless steel spring clip (for the cover). There is no solder (no lead) used in the screen bonding. The added/optional draw pipe accessory (not necessary to use the Box) is now made of glass (they were previously made of Acrylic).
There are no hazardous materials used anywhere in the Box, so yes, the Box is safe. None of these components or materials ever get hot enough to be of any concern.
Overall, the Box is very durable (can be dropped without harm, etc). Occasionally people break the lid off when the Box is open (don’t hold the Box by the lid), or by dropping it on an especially hard surface. The Box is designed to withstand side to side shaking as part of the normal technique of usage.
The only part which is delicate is the internal screen which is very thin – use only the provided brush as a tool in direct contact with the screen. The screen itself is not replaceable. If the screen becomes damaged (whatever the reason) we send a replacement Box unit for free (it’s part of the warranty).
The Box is usually calibrated to be at 380° Fahrenheit four seconds after the moment the Box is started, assuming a fairly slow constant draw rate and average environmental conditions.
The temperature in the device is controlled by the draw rate (i.e., breath control). Like with the wind, faster tends to mean cooler. To get higher temperatures in the load, you need to draw very slowly. By drawing directly from the Box (i.e., using the Box in the ‘native’ mode), you will also be able to sense the temperature of the vapor stream as well as the taste (this is the recommended practice). Also, the battery is left in only for the duration of the draw, (or if taking multiple draws in quick succession, for as long as the load lasts). The Box user MUST remember to retract or remove the battery when you are finished taking a draw, otherwise the load will get too hot.
No, generally not. By acting as an emission surface, it rarely collects any sort of residue, even after long term usage.
It is normal, however, for the color of the screen to darken with time. This does not affect the functionality of the Box.
The simplest and easiest way is to figure that one battery will support (roughly) one load. One load will provide between 4 to 8 draws, depending on your usage/taste preferences. Some people will be able to get more than this (2 or 3 loads) or more draws per load (up to 12), but we recommend keeping more charged batteries on hand than you think you may need.
For example, let’s say you are calculating how many batteries you will need on a camping trip. A conservative estimate would be to figure that one Box filling will be sufficient for one person and will require one charged battery. Therefore, if you had two people who wanted to use the same Box twice a day for two days, that would be 8 Box loads and therefore 8 charged batteries.
The provided batteries, if treated well (not overheated) can be expected to support 500 recharge cycles. Therefore, even a heavy user who works the Box several times a day can expect the rechargeable batteries to last quite a long time (think months, if not years). Although we do not make the batteries, we have found them to be very reliable over the long term.
Each filling will take between 50 to 100 milligrams of material (depending on the herb, approx. 1/4 of a teaspoon).
We recommend that you add ground, unpacked material until it is level with the groove (but do not fill the chamber), even if this may be more than you would normally need. Because the Box is able to heat up nearly instantly (no waiting), it is convenient to use. Because the Box is also able to cool off again nearly instantly, it does not waste any material either. The Box only requires battery power when you are actually drawing on it.
Instant on and instant off heating means you can control exactly when doses are delivered with the Box. Vapor is dispensed only when you want it — which means no wasted vapors (more efficient). By removing the battery when you are done taking a draw, the rest of the un-vaped material can simply wait to be cooked later (even hours later). When not in use, the Box simply stores your loaded material unchanged. This is very different than most other vape units which must cook the entire load to completion once they have been started.
By filling to level, you will be getting more overall vapor per charged battery. Each charged battery will provide the same heating in the Box whether it is fully loaded or empty. Therefore, any part of the unit which is hot but not loaded wastes heat and battery charge. You may as well load it fully and get the full benefit of the battery energy. Also, under filling the Box can result in lower vapor density (the ratio of vapor to air).
If you wish to vape more than 200 milligrams of material per day, you will probably need additional NiMH batteries (which we can supply, or you can purchase along with a charger in most electronics stores). A good fast charger tends to cost between $15 and $35 and usually comes with the right batteries.
Done properly, you get a constant vapor supply. The draw rate needs to be slow for this — think of sipping from a teacup. If you pull too fast, it will get more airy. The taste is an immediate feedback and a good guide.
The overall level of cooking is mostly defined by how long you use it – how many draws you take. You can get just about any type of final output you want. It is possible, for example, to bring the load to an even dark chocolate brown if you want to, although the taste towards the end may not be the best. Normally, we expect a single loading to provide between 4 and 8 draws, each of around 20 seconds in length. The key is to tap or shake the box to stir the load from time to time – this ensures even and consistent results.
Throughout the process, the ultimate taste is dependent on technique. Good usage technique with the Box consists of two aspects: control of the heating process and stirring of the material. Good taste begins by ensuring that the battery is only fully in the Box during a draw, and by controlling the draw rate. From the time that you put the battery fully in until you begin drawing should be fairly short – less than 5 seconds. To run the Box cooler (better taste), try drawing a little more quickly and do not wait as long before beginning your draw. To get more or denser vapor, draw more slowly or wait a little longer. The correct timing and draw rate – not too fast nor too slow – is something learned in time. When you complete the draw, be sure to pull the battery out a bit right away so that the Box does not continue needlessly heating (otherwise the load will get too hot and the taste will be changed).
Don’t forget to shake! It’s helpful to look through the cover to see that the stir is actually happening – sometimes bits stick together and do not mix as much as needed. Taste is improved by ensuring an even mixing by shaking the Box between draws.
Compared to smoking, it is. Obviously, the material itself may have a certain minimum level of smell, even before using in any device. With correct user technique, what the Box offers is no additional level of smell. With the right material and with a practiced user, the Box vapor can be very smell free.
Obviously, we strongly recommend that the Box user develop their stealth technique and test their progress with trusted friends before going out and using in public. Be responsible, do not take unnecessary risks, and be sure you know what you are doing before you try it.
Yes, especially if you have a few extra charged batteries.
If you are passing the Box, ensure that under no circumstances will the battery ever be in the Box when no one is drawing on it for more than about 3 seconds. This requires the Box owner to ensure that each person in a group applies and withdraws the battery individually BEFORE letting them pass the Box around hot. The Box truly is ultra fast – this needs to be accounted for in group usage.
A good approach is to 1) show a new user in the group how to put the battery in, 2) then hand the Box over without complete battery insertion and then 3) explain that a long slow draw is required. Let the new user start the Box themselves and take their 1st draw. Immediately when they are done with their draw, take the Box back from them and withdraw the battery, showing them that it is necessary to do so. Then the Box can be passed around, ensuring that each person knows to insert and withdraw the battery individually (as if the battery were being used as a lighter) as the Box goes around.
This technique avoids the common problem of passing the Box to a new user while it is ‘on’ and then explaining how to use it – while the Box is overheating the herb. This can result in a first draw that is needlessly too hot and harsh.

Rechargeable batteries must be fully charged before use (about 4 hours of charge time with our bundled charger), and may be left in the provided charger between sessions. A single fully charged battery can be expected to provide enough power for 5 minutes of drawable vapor.
